If you are working on jewelries, computer components, glass jewelries, or any metal, you definitely need a soldering gun. Soldering has a new meaning and they are not only reserved for combining two metal parts together anymore, but now in making gold, silver, and glass jewelries.

A lot professionals and hobbyists use soldering guns for a lot of projects and a solder wire is an indispensable part of the process. A solder is a metal alloy of tin and lead and they usually have a 50/50 mixture.

The solder in solid form, quickly melts and flows like liquid, binding two or more components together very quickly. The tip of the soldering gun can heat up to a very high temperature so you must be careful when using it.

The art of soldering takes years to perfect, so a lot of practice is involved in order to work on more delicate work such as jewelry or electronic devices such as computer circuit boards, television, radio, and other delicate parts. The solder is a material that resists rust or corrosion so your work lasts for quite sometime.

There are two types of soldering guns: the traditional part which needs electric current to heat up the tip and the other one is a cordless, battery operated cold heat soldering gun. The cold heat variety has 3 tips; beveled, chisel and the rounded tip that you can interchange in between jobs.

The cold heat type is used for delicate work, especially electronic components of a computer or devices. A solder gun’s tip is the most important part because it gets very hot in a matter of seconds so you have to be very careful when using them.

Depending on your work and preference, you can choose any soldering gun. If you have one that does not have a temperature control, you buy a solder station. A solder station keeps the tip hot because it has a temperature control setting.

Another thing, the solder also plays an important part. A solder usually has a 50/50 combination of tin and alloy, but if you work on a larger projects, you can choose a 40/60 alloy. This in turn, needs a high temperature tip to melt it.
